By analogy with leaf venation, first-order (i.e. midrib/main axis), 
second order, etc., branches may well be best here - used in 
inflorescence descriptions as well.



And you may need the general adaxial/abaxial to describe surfaces of 
the leaf, and then there is ad/abmedial...
