Dear curator of Gramene,
CIRAD is a French scientific organization specializing in agricultural
research for the tropics and subtropics of the world. Its mission is to
contribute to rural development in the countries of these regions
through research, experiments, training, and dissemination of scientific
and technical information. Its work covers agricultural, veterinary,
forestry, and food sciences. Cirad is part of two projects which intend
to develop databases on genetic and genomic information.
1) The first one is leaded by Cirad. We have created a database called
Tropgene-DB that manages genetic and genomic information obtained by
Cirad and its partners on tropical crops. This database will be a public
database, accessible through internet in a couple of months, and open to
the whole scientific community.
The database is organised in crop specific modules. Each module includes
data on genetic resources (agro-morphological data, parentages, allelic
diversity), information on molecular markers, genetic maps, results of
QTL analyses, data from physical mapping, sequences, genes, as well as
corresponding references. Three modules are presently functional (sugar
cane, banana tree, cocoa). Modules on other tropical crops are being
developed among which one on rice that will include Cirad results on
mapping populations (notably the IR64 x Azucena one) and QTL detection.
2) The second one is leaded by Genoplante which is a group of French
public and private institutions dealing with crop genomics. Cirad is one
of the members of Genoplante. The bioinformatics team has developed a
database called GPi-DB integrating mapping results from several species
(rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, barley, rapeseed, etc.) from public and
private partners and is building tools to visualize syntenic
relationships between crops. The data in the database will be made
public six month after their deposition into the database and accessible
through internet. Cirad is in charge of collecting the rice data for
GPi-DB. Other institutions are in charge of providing data for other species
In the cases of both databases, it would be interesting for us to
include the published reference genetic maps which are available in rice.
We would like to download the rice genetic maps and the information on
markers that are part of these maps which are present on your site and
include them into these two databases. The source of the data will of
course be mentioned as well as the reference of the original paper in
which the data were published. We will also include a link to your database.
1) We would like to ask you whether you would give us authorization to
do so for Tropgene-DB?
2) And whether you would give us authorization to do so for GPi-DB?
We ask you for two separate authorizations since these two databases are
completely independent.
Thank you very much in advance
Best regards
Brigitte Courtois
