Dear Terence,

You can find the info on BG 79 from the following URLs:
http://www.iris.irri.org/cgi-bin/Germplasm.pl?name=BG79

http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/swish/accboth?query=BG+79&submit=Submit+Text+Query&si=0

However, it is hard to say what the letters (BG) stand for (the number is
generally the serial number for collection or breeding project). Anyway,
from the URLs, you can know, the variety was developed in Guyana from a
single cross between IGT/RPI 75-1 and ENGKATEK.

Hope this info helpful to you.
