Laura,

Thanks for the effort made. I agree that photographs may not capture all
relevant morphological details and that pen drawings can do so. They
complement one another. I will try to get a hold of Slageren's book.

Regards,
             Maarten

Dear Maarten,

The 1994 monograph on Aegilops done by Michael van Slageren is your best
bet for an easy to locate, and excellent quality, botanical illustration of

Ae. taushcii (and all other Aegilops species). Copies should be available
at libraries or germplasm units. Info for purchasing from ICARDA can be
found here: http://www.icarda.org/Publications/Price_List/Book2/Book2.html

In case the link doesn't work, here's the book title, etc: M.W. Slageren.
1994. Wild Wheats: a Monograph of Aegilops L. and Amblyopyrum (Jaub &
Spach) Eig (Poaceae). Wageningen Agricultural University Papers
94-7. Wageningen Agricultural University & ICARDA.

Finding good botanical illustrations of the wheats, either available in
texts or on the internet, is fundamentally an issue of funding. There
hasn't been a strong interest in supporting taxonomic work nor a
recognition for its value. Similarly, the little work that has been
supported has been largely undertaken with the presumption that photos are
a suitable alternative to Herbarium specimens and
illustrations. Regrettably, they're not.

If WAU and ICARDA can be convinced to make the Aegilops illustrations
available for posting on the GrainTax website, that would be a nice step
forward. I also have other wheat illustrations done by the same artist as
those provided by Mary Barkworth which could be posted provided copyright
issues don't arise for their later publication.

As the principal contributor to GrainTax
(http://wheat.pw.usda.gov/ggpages/GrainTax/index.shtml), which links to the

KSU Wheat Genetic Resources site
(https://www.ksu.edu/wgrc/Taxonomy/taxintro.html), for most of the
postings, I can speak to the desire for getting keys, drawings, etc. posted

and universally available. Unfortunately, this is not sufficient to contend

with the reality that such work doesn't attract funds. Thus, GrainTax is
still "in-process". Unless there are plentiful volunteer hours available,
this type of useful taxonomic information can't get beyond back burner
status.

Perhaps your frustrations in searching for good illustrations will help
stir up some interest in addressing the funding issue.
