[Gmod-help] gmod settings

hi
 
i recently was playing gmod and i was adjusting the 
video settings and i decided to run it in a window. i applied the settings and 
it ran it in the window but i wasnt able to do anything ( it was just a still 
image ).  so i ended it and tried loading the game back up and it still didnt 
work  (it would say preparing to run gmod and then it would just dissapear ) . 
so i asked the internet and and said that i needed to type in -dxlevel 81 in the 
set launch options of the properties window in the steam game list for garry's 
mod. i did that and it works fine now. the only problem is that the game wont 
save any of the game settings ( i.e. resolution, shadows etc ). i can apply them 
but once i disconnect and quit the game it automaticaly resets back to the 
minimum settings every time i run the game.
 
PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ HELP ME!!! 

btw i have windows vista
