Dear Steve,

This is because you are looking at the 'genome' file, which is a mix of all
'toplevel' sequence.  You may want to look at the associated README for a
full description of the barley's DNA directory 's contents:

ftp://ftp.ensemblgenomes.org/pub/plants/release-25/fasta/hordeum_vulgare/dna/README

Note:

rm = repeated masked
sm = soft masked (i.e. repeats in lower case)
